Abstract
USC researchers have developed an integrative tool named Phenolyzer, a phenotype-based gene analyzer. Phenolyzer takes a discrete list of phenotype terms as input and generates a list of candidate genes weighted by the chance of being associated with the phenotype, even in the absence of any genotype data. This advanced word matcher searches databases, grows the seed gene set, and generates visualization of gene-phenotype network and gene-gene network on the fly.
Benefit
- User-friendly web server
- Easy access for users without informatics skills
- Intuitive result understanding
Market Application
Access to individual genetic information is driving the creation of a direct-to-consumer genome sequencing market. Technologies are being created comparing the individual’s genotype variations with published literature to determine likelihood of disease risk. However, to best prioritize candidate genes, traditional approaches typically do not consider prior knowledge on associations between genes and specific phenotypes.
