Abstract
USC researchers have developed a low-cost, multi-material 3D printer that achieves high resolution, versatile materials, and high printing speeds at a projected cost of less than $6,000 per machine. This allows organizations of all sizes to benefit. The technology hopes to democratize the multi-material additive manufacturing industry.
Benefit
-
Fast multi-material 3D printer
-
Print more materials at a high resolution
-
Significantly lower costs for equipment, machine maintenance and operation
Market Application
As 3D printing technologies mature, additive manufacturing is becoming an integral part of research, industry, medical, education, and entertainment fields. Being able to print multiple materials simultaneously is becoming a key enabler for adoption of 3D printing in these sectors. The two major printing technologies able to print multiple materials, however, are extremely expensive (approximately $250,000). In addition, the technology in these printers is limited as they leave out a large selection of viscous materials. The available machines are slow, and offer low surface quality. While there are low-cost printers, they do not offer high resolution printing and are also slow.
