2019-187 - Metasurfaces for High-Efficient IR Photodetectors

Description:

Market Opportunity

Infrared photodetectors are used in a wide variety of applications. Depending on the intensity of light signals and the type of information to be obtained, photo sensitivity and S/N required of infrared detectors differ. To improve the S/N, cooling the infrared detector will be necessary.

USC Solution

Researchers at USC have developed IR photodetectors with increased photo sensitivity. The researchers placed patterned dielectric layers on top of CMOS IR photodetectors as a metasurface layer to enhance the light absorption. The pattern of the dielectric layer was designed and optimized for enhanced light absorption.
