2017-048 - Computerized Assessment of Mental Status (CAMS)

Description:
  • Psychiatric diagnosis
  • Mental Status Exam
  • Psychological evaluation

Abstract

USC researchers have developed a computerized, automated tool that assesses a subject’s emotional response to objectively evaluate an individual’s mental status through automatic and quantitative methods. This software can be administered remotely and thus help clinicians monitor patients’ symptoms over time. Due to its ability to be remote and self-explanatory, there subjects can complete the examination anywhere using a smart phone, tablet, or computer.

Benefit

  • Increase diagnostic accuracy
  • Can be administered remotely
  • Scalable
  • Cost-effective method for clinical assessment

Market Application

The Mental Status Exam (MSE) is the current method for quantifying social-emotional abnormalities in mental healthcare settings. Despite its clinical importance, the data for MSE is collected through a combination of unstructured observations and focused questions during an in-person interview. Other methods of data collection include clinician judgment and self-report surveys. These approaches are subject to variability and lack reliability due to subjectivity. While some tools can be used to evaluate individual symptoms, there are currently no commercially available products that try to assess social-emotional behavior using evocative stimuli and audio visual recording.
